This was the main theme this weekend. I shall explain why.
Pump (my energy) up:
If you follow my tweets, you may have gathered that I was running very low on energy on Friday and couldn’t wait for the clock to strike 5pm. How did I spend my evening you ask? Well, I had a date with my jammies and The Blind Side. If you haven’t seen it, it’s one of my favourite films and I highly recommend it.
Here’s a little-known fact: I have an aunt who is almost exactly like Sandra Bullock’s character in this film. She’s awesome and I think of her every single time I watch it.
In addition to my super-relaxed evening, I went to bed at 9pm. Yep, 9 bells. While the rest of KW was busy Oktoberfesting, I was slumberfesting and it felt great. And I woke up at 9am. A solid 12 hours of rest was just what I needed because on Saturday….
(Body) Pump it up:
On Saturday I attended the quarterly group exercise instructor practice that I’m required to go to just before each new Les Mills release comes out. (For more about Les Mills and RPM, the program I teach, check out the second half of this post.) It is affectionately known as the BFP, or Big Fat Practice. Remember when I talked about going to Les Mills Day at the Can Fit Pro Conference this year? These meetings are a bit like that, but with only the instructors from my region as opposed to all across Canada. Nevertheless, we have LOTS of fun! We did a couple of tracks from each new release, for each program. There are currently 8 Les Mills programs running in Canada, and if you’re not familiar with them yet, here’s a little taster:
While I’m on this topic, don’t forget that THIS WEEK is new release week and all Les Mills programs have new music. I have to admit, RPM’s new tunes are grrrrreat, so find a class near you and see what I’m talking about!
Pump (my run) up:
Many runners I’ve spoken to, myself included, are loyal to one brand when it comes to running shoes. For me that brand is Asics, and it would be very difficult to get me to make a switch. Normally my shoes are replaced every 5 months, or sooner if I’ve been running outside. The shopping trip this weekend was long overdue because my current pair (Gel 2150′s) have been hard at work since April. Hoping not to spend a fortune, the first pair tested were an older model (maybe the Gel 1140s) in white and orange.
You know how black is supposed to be a “slimming” colour? Well, when it comes to shoes, white is certainly NOT one I should go for. It makes size 10 feet look like a size 15. Not good. After trying many options, I decided to go with a pair of Gel 2140′s, which is last year’s model but very similar in design.
These little babies ran their first 8.5 miles this morning and they were awesome. Just like running on a cloud!
Pump(kin) it up:
Ever since pumpkin season fall began, I’ve been dying to make one thing in my kitchen. This weekend it happened. It required a perfectly-sized mini sugar pumpkin which up until this weekend, I hadn’t been able to find.
I’m not sure what it was about having a real pumpkin (as opposed to canned) that was so exciting, but I thought it looked rather cute. It wasn’t nearly as difficult to hollow out as I’d anticipated, and the flesh on the inner walls was nice and soft after baking for 45 minutes. I’ve posted the recipe (Big Fat Stuffed Pumpkin for One), but I must warn that I’m not 100% satisfied with the seasoning of the stuffing just yet. I used a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves – mainly because these spices scream fall to me and I like to incorporate them into meals as often as possible – to season the apples, chicken, celery, onion, walnuts and raisins. It sounded like a good idea in my head but came out a bit bland. Feel free to contribute some ideas for pumping up the flavour a bit more if you have some!
And now, it’s go time. I’m off to work, but first, a little tune to pump you up on this fine Monday morning…
…and, I want to know:
- Was this weekend ‘pumped up’ for you in any way?
- Are you loyal to a brand of running shoe? Which one?
- Remember my post last week about mindful eating, and how I decided that this weekend was going to be a ‘mindful eating weekend’? Well, I’d say my success was about 60%. I plan to work on this more throughout the week. If you focused on eating mindfully and slowing down this weekend, how did it go?
Note: My apologies for the odd photo spacing… I’m looking into getting it sorted out. Does anyone else have this problem with WordPress, or is it just my monitor?
