Kitchen How-To: Sweet Potato Chips

February 17, 2011

If you’ve been to the grocery store lately, I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for any sweet potato shortages. I have been secretly hoarding them and turning them into something incredibly delicious.

I consider myself much more of a savoury person than a sweets person, but I’m not really one to crave chips (or crisps as we’d call them if I was back in the Middle East or in Scotland). Well, unless it’s sweet potato chips. This snack is far healthier than regular potato chips or deep-fried chips, not to mention so easy to make. Sweet potatos are packed with vitamins A (for strong vision, hair, and healthy skin) and C, and beta carotene (for boosting immunity and elimination of free radicals, which are the nasties floating about in our bodies). Sweet potatos are far superior to regular taters, don’t ya think?

Step 1: Preheat oven to 400ºF. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2: Peel sweet potatos and slice them as thin as you possibly can. Thinner is definitely better here! I used my mandoline for this (with the safety handle… because I learned my lesson the first time.)

Step 3: Gather your seasonings of choice and some extra virgin olive oil.

I used black pepper and Herbamare sea salt, but there are lots of combos. Some suggestions:

  • lemon juice and fresh rosemary
  • cajun seasoning
  • cinnamon and nutmeg

Step 4: Arrange the sweet potato slices on the parchment paper so they don’t overlap. Mist them with olive oil. (If you have a mister, this is ideal. If not, you can do a little DIY project and put some in a small spray bottle. I promise it will come in handy for other things, especially if you do a lot of stir frying, or if you like sweet potato fries or kale chips!) Sprinkle with sea salt and pepper, or other seasonings.

Step 5: Bake in the oven until the sweet potatos become slightly brown and crispy. This should take about 15 minutes. If you want, switch the oven to the broil setting for 1 or 2 minutes to make them even crispier. If you do this, they’ll come out looking a little something like…

Step 6: Let the chips cool, then eat them all up!

Questions for today:

  • What’s your preference: Sweet potato chips or wedges?
  • When you’re looking for a snack, do you tend to go for sweet or savoury?

I think the rise of the sweet potato is one of the greatest things to happen in a long time! SP fries are so good, and your step by step instructions are great.

That sounds SO good. I love salt and vinegar so I think I’m going to try the vinegar trick next time. I’m jealous of your office window – I don’t have one! LOVING the warm weather though! :)

I love baking sweet potatoes like this. So easy, yes so good! We’ve received sweet potatoes in our CSA produce box quite a bit – I just can’t get enough!

400 worked for me, but you could probably make it hotter if you want to – I’m not very precise when it comes to oven temps! If they’re not crisping up enough, just switch to the broiler setting for a bit.

Oh my gosh–these look fab!! Making them tonight!!! :)

I’ve been told that I am not allowed to get a mandolin because I will most certainly injure myself! haha I’m a bit klutzy in the kitchen (and really everywhere for that matter)!

    I’m a sweet & savory snacker–I need a little bit of both!

    Have a great day!! <3
