Awesome April Abs
G’morning friends!
Anyone else joining me in the “it’s-almost-the-long-weekend” happy dance? Thank you so much for all of your good luck vibes yesterday. The event I co-planned at work went really well. There are still plenty of post-event tasks that I have to tackle today, but there were no catastrophes at all so I was a very happy girl at 5pm yesterday evening! You know when it feels like an enormous weight has been lifted off of your shoulders? Well, that’s sort of what I feel like now. And it’s an absolutely lovely feeling.
In addition to being happy and relieved, I was also a very sweaty girl by 7pm after I finished teaching the new Les Mills RPM 50 release. The class was great and my participants had a TON of energy!!! Just a warning if you haven’t done it yet – the back half of the release is hard! However, track 6 is Poppiholla by Chicane and it is a great song, so I’ve a short version of it here for you today:
A nice start to the morning, don’t you think?
You may remember from my April goals post that one of my focuses this month is to do 3 core workouts per week – not just total body moves that involve my core, but also some that target the area specifically. I received a few emails from readers curious about what I was doing, so today I figured I’d share one of my current routines with you.
The Awesome April Abs Workout
There are only 4 parts in this workout, but I’ve been doing 3 sets of each with 30 seconds rest in between each set. If you want to boost your calorie burn in between sets, you can add in fast mountain climbers – do as many as you can in 30s and try to beat your record each time!
1. 45 degree side crunch and back extensions. For this move, you’ll need a Roman chair, which looks like this:
After doing a round of 10 back extensions….
Do 10 side-crunches on each side by staggering your feet one in front of the other, or stacking them (whatever is more comfortable) and placing your fingers on either side of your head. Facing to the side of the room, lean sideways as you lower one elbow downward, then contract your obliques to rise back up.
Alternatively you can also do both of these moves on a stability ball. (It helps if you anchor your feet by pushing them against a wall.) To make it more challenging, you can hold a plate or medicine ball at your chest or above your head.
Complete these 3 exercises without rest, then take about 30 seconds before moving on to a 2nd and 3rd set.
2. Captain chair leg raises with negatives. If you like to feel that you’ve worked the lower part of your core, this one is for you!
Position yourself on the captain’s chair as shown above. Straighten your legs, and raise them up so that they are parallel to the ground. Your legs and torso should form a 90 degree angle. Then, lower back down with control to the beginning of the exercise. Repeat 10 times. Then, do 5 repetitions where you raise your legs up to parallel with the floor, and lower them as slowly as you possibly can. Finally, raise your legs one more time and hold them in the extended position for as long as you can. Lower, rest 30 seconds, then repeat the whole sequence 2 more times.
3. Plank to push-up. This one is great because you don’t need any equipment – your own body weight will be enough! Start in a low plank position, with your shoulders, back, butt, and legs forming a straight line.
Next, push yourself up onto your hands, into high plank position.
Do a single push up, then lower back down to the starting low plank position. Repeat until you’ve done 10 full reps – or 10 push ups in total. If this is too difficult, you can do your planking and push-ups with your knees touching the ground.
4. Squat thrusts: This is more of a total-body move, but a great one for getting your heart rate up and knocking the last bits of energy out of you! Start off standing with your arms at your sides. Bend your knees as you stick your butt out behind you and lower into a squat.
Place your hands on the floor about shoulder width apart, and kick your legs back into high plank pose. Then, spring off your toes and bring your feet back in, near your hands, returning to the squat position. Stand back up and repeat 10 times. Rest for 30 seconds, then do 2 more sets.
If you want to turn this into a burpee, you can jump as you stand, and throw your hands as high as possible to gain momentum.
It seems that no matter how many I do and how often I practice, burpees never get any easier!
Alrighty friends, time for me to get cracking. I’ll leave you with my questions for today:
- Have there been any big obstacles, goals, or projects that you’ve tackled and conquered this week? Tell me about them!
- Have you done any of the new Les Mills releases yet this week? What did you think? I’ve also done Body Pump and the music is great this time around (release 77).

I really love all the ab moves you shared…the captain chair (which I didn’t know that was called) is one of my favs!
Congratulations on your event! The plank to pushup move is such a killer workout for me whenever I try it. Thanks for a few new ones to try, too!
SO happy for the upcoming holiday weekend
These are some of my favorites!
Congratulations on your event, you must feel awesome and accomplished
Thank you for these moves! Perfect timing for the approaching summer
I have finals coming up so the next few weeks are going to be filled with studying, writing papers and stress… I will be happy to get through this, vacation will be on the other side!
Congrats!! Glad it was a success for yah, Angela!!!
I love your ab workout. ‘
This week I am TRYING to accomplish something but she is staying put
great post!!! can’t wait to try some of these.
I’ve also been trying to fit in more ab workouts and I think you notice a difference in strength pretty quickly! I do a lot of leg raises too for my lower abs which is always my weakest area and reverse crunches. But these are all some great ones too I’ll be incorporating into my routine
