Fit Bit Friday 27
Happy Friday!
How are you feeling today? This morning started off a little slow for me – bed was feeling like a much better idea than the gym, especially with the big dump of snow we got yesterday! But after a little mental kick in the butt, I was on dressed and on the treadmill, prancing along to some of my favourite tunes-of-the-moment. Lately I’ve been learning my new Les Mills RPM release (launching next week!) and I know I’ve said it before, but the music on RPM 53 is fantastic!
Work It Out
On Wednesday, I sent out the following tweet:
I knew that the rows and lat pull-downs I’d done in the gym the previous day were the cause of the muscle pain in my back, but I was really surprised that the core workout I created for myself hit as hard as it did!! As one of my spin participants put it, “You must have done something right!” If you love that hurts-so-good feeling the day after your workout in your core, this one is for you!
The Washboard Abs Workout
For this routine you’ll need a few pieces of equipment in the gym: An adjustable cable machine, an exercise ball, 2 kettlebells, and a mat (for comfort). You’ll complete the exercises in supersets, doing one immediately after the next, then resting for a minute before doing your next set. Once you’ve completed 3 rounds of the first pair, move on to superset 2.
The chart below provides the names of each exercise, but for the details on how to do them, click here to see the full PDF.
To get a good stretch through your abs, try exercises like the upward dog, as well as the stability ball stretch shown below.
Turn It Up
Before I get to this week’s featured song, I thought I’d announce that I’ve finally updated the Tunes Page, and it now includes a list of (almost) all of the songs from Fit Bit Fridays until #26. The update was long overdue!! This week’s tune is DJ Tiesto’s remix of Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. It’s from the Grey’s Anatomy soundtrack, and makes a great running or spin song. The beat picks up in a couple of spots – perfect for busting out a few quick sprints!
Have a Read
I came across this article recently about the Miss America 2012 contestants. It talks about their approaches to health and fitness, and contrary to what you might assume, the girls are certainly not the stereotypical rail-thin women of pageants in earlier years. Take a look at the slideshow, then tell me what you think – are pageants taking a turn for the better, or do you think they’re still a showcase of unrealistic bodies?
And finally, my questions for today:
- What is one of the healthy choices you’ll be making this weekend?
- Favourite ab exercises: Let’s hear ‘em!

brrr is right! that was quite the snowfall yesterday. i am ready for spring – now!
this weekend, i have a great mix of workouts, work, socials and me time -> all of those make me feel healthy in different ways.
planks! i love planks! i love working core muscles but with planks i see strength gains.
have a great weekend, angela! and way to go on customizing your own killer core routine!
Sounds like a fantastic weekend ahead Cathy! Great balance!
This weekend I’ll be doing a run for my half marathon training. I’ll also be catching up on a sleep and doing some healthy cooking!
I love scissor kicks, so simple yet so effective http://www.bodybuilding.com/exercises/detail/view/name/scissor-kick
Have a great weekend
That’s a great one! Happy weekend to you too Amber!
Its my bday today so no guarantees on healthy food choices but I’ll be working out on the beach hopefully tomorrow
love plank for core/abs
Happy Birthday (again!)!!!! I hope you have a great one.
Oh, and I’m insanely jealous that you get to work out on the beach. I think I need to move to south Florida!
I think high knees and star jumps are great for abs!! Happy Friday!
Favorite Abe Exercise is I think they call it a Tummy Tuck. You lay on floor with knees bent, arch your back and tap each foot on the floor aleternating legs, kind of like the bicycle, but I feel this exercise more. It’s great for the lower abs.
Love the ab workout. Took a picture with my iphone for the gym today!
Favorite ab exercises:
1. Good mornings- done correctly, these hit your core really hard
2. Superset of leg raises, cross legged crunches (isolates the core) & roll-outs.
Way to go pageant ladies! Wow, I’m impressed. Loving the ab workout! Totally going to try that this weekend
I wish we had more Les Mills classes at my gym (we only have BodyPump)! The music on BP release 80 is fantastic, too, but I want more options lol.
I know what you mean – just BP would get tiring after a while! Sorry to hear you were a little underwhelmed (I just read your post – I agree with the comment about the lunge track!) In the very random event that you ever happen to be up here in Ontario, let me know and I’ll get some Les Mills RPM action lined up for you!
I had a friend who was Miss PA one year – she would swim in jeans to strengthen her quads! She did have amazing legs.
Wow, I never would have thought of that little trick!
Yay for ab workouts! I ignore mine too often. Healthy choice this weekend… getting some extra Zzz’s and actually working out on the weekend! Both days
Woohoo – that’s awesome! I’m running on 4 hours sleep right now (not my usual, I assure you!) so zzz’s are in my plans this weekend too!
I love working my abs! It’s always so satisfying when I laugh and they are a little sore
My healthy choice this weekend is snowboarding on Sunday. Hope you enjoy your weekend!
Have a great time! I wish I could snowboard – I’d far rather be able to do that than ski because the gear looks so much cooler lol!
I love that hurts so good feeling – especially when it’s abs! As for healthy choices this weekend, I’m not sure yet. We are looking at a crapload of snow, so I think my weekend is going to be a whole lot of warm activities at home.
Have a wonderful weekend!!
Ugh I hear ya on the snow… we had quite a snow storm yesterday and I was out on the highway. Needless to say, my black car is absolutely filthy and needs a bath… but I don’t plan to do it myself in these temperatures! Stay warm Stef!
