Fit Bit Friday 29
Good morning!
Anyone else doing the “I’m so happy it’s Friday” dance this morning? I sure am! What started out as a dreary, cold and snowy week has somehow ended in sunshine, temperatures above zero, and barely any snow on the ground. No complaints here!
Thanks so much to all of you for sharing your goals for February in yesterday’s post. I love hearing what all of you are going to be busy achieving over the next 4 weeks and hope you’ll keep me updated on your progress. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out the comments section from that post!
Over to my usual feature for this time of the week, here’s your dose of Fit Bit Friday!
Work it Out
Due to the fact that my weekends have been busy lately, I’ve been trying to spend as little of my precious weekend time in the gym as possible. My favourite routines over the past month have been those that tackle cardio and strength training in one hit. This week’s Fit Bit Friday is certainly one of those!
The Take-My-Pulse Workout
This routine will get your heart pumping and help you to build muscular strength at the same time. You’ll complete 5 sets (shown in the left column below), each one comprised of a strength exercise and a cardio drill. For the first pair, do the strength exercise and follow immediately with the 30s of cardio. Repeat twice more to make 3 rounds, then move onto the next strength/cardio pairing. These strength exercises are all moves that you’re likely familiar with, but if you need a bit more info, feel free to print the PDF, where I’ve included full descriptions of each move.
To keep things interesting, you won’t just be doing the usual “up for 2 counts, down for 2 counts” with your dumbells. This is called the Take-My-Pulse” Workout for a reason, and that’s because you’ll be pulsing the weights (or your own body weight) as you near the end of each set of reps. Why bother? Well, the extra pulsing and change to your usual lifting rhythm confuses the muscles, and increases the time that your muscles are under tension. You’ll be working harder in a way that your body isn’t used to, which means you can expect greater strength gains. Are you in!?
As always, be sure to stretch out and re-hydrate when you’re finished.
Turn it Up
Ok, I’ll admit that once I actually listened to Domino by Jessie J closely, it came to my attention that the lyrics aren’t exactly something you’d want your child singing at the top of their lungs. However, this song is so darn catchy that it’s been stuck in my head for days. The fact that I’m still not sick of it is an indication that it must be a pretty great one, so that’s why it’s your Fit Bit Friday tune feature of the week. Oh, and if you’re thinking that it sounds very Katy Perry-esque, she co-wrote it.

Check it out if you’re looking for a good Friday laugh. I bet you’ll be able to match faces from your usual gym crowd to the people described here!

Alright, that’s all for me this week. I hope you have a fantastic weekend and I’ll see you back here on Monday, but first tell me:
- What’s one thing you’re going to do to be kind to yourself this weekend?
- What’s one song that you can’t seem to get out of your head lately?

I love the songsyou pick!! Happy Friday
Quick and effective my workout philosophy
who needs more—right?
love quick and effective..thats my style!
weekend…go buy a treadmill then figure out how to get it in my car and lug it up 3 flights of stairs (alone)
and yea I’ll admit it…sexy & i know it is stuck in my head compliments of my daughter & my brother lol
That’s exciting that you’re getting a treadmill! Maybe you can bribe someone at the shop to come and help you carry it upstairs.
Good luck!
what a hoot! enjoyed that article and had a good chuckle! oh so true!!
and thank you…
now that song is stuck in MY head! freeing up yours to go about planning a fantastic weekend!
One thing i will do to be kind to myself this weekend is have a good visit with a girl friend … i spend so much time with family that i seldom get time with a good friend… that’s the plan tomorrow!
That sounds like a GREAT weekend Lynn! I’ll be off to visit one of my besties as well tomorrow. Enjoy your time together!
Ahhh I love pulsing!! Yay! I can’t wait to try this routine. So, I am really glad you said that song was co-written by Katy Perry because it totally does sound like her. When it first came out I thought it was her singing it! They sound so similar. Crazy. My thing to be kind to myself this weekend- I’m taking a rest day today! It was on the books anyways, but I really need it.
I’m with you on the rest day! Mine is Sunday and I’m totally needing it. I hope your foam roller arrives soon so you can roll out those legs, and have an awesome 5 miler this weekend!!
Thank WSJ article is hilarious! I’m going dancing tonight to celebrate the weekend, and I have to say I’m psyched.
Woohoo now that sounds like a fun fitness routine!
Enjoy!
Angela,
Love the blog this week, as usual. I bet you’re getting pretty tired of me saying that! Hahaha
Anyways, that’s a great looking workout! I’m going to give it a try this week!
Talk to you soon!
Peter
Haha nope I’ll never get tired of it!
Thanks so much – yours is coming along quite nicely too. Have a fantastic weekend and work those bootcampers hard tomorrow!
love quick intense workouts! and great song too!
i’m the worst for not focussing on lyrics – it’s all about a catchy tune and fast beat, to me. i love “last night,” by ian carey/snoop dog, for example – and the lyrics make it a song to NOT play in the car with the nieces!!
enjoy your weekend, angela! i am with you on loving our “winter” weather!
Hi Angela,
I recently found your blog. I love it. Great inspiration. I am an IIN grad and have a health coaching practice. You are going to be FANTASTIC. You have so much knowledge and inspiration to share. Good Luck, I will be adding you to my daily reads!
~Maria
Hi Maria,
I’m so glad you found me, and thank you so much for all of your kind words! I love meeting other IIN grads. I’m loving the course and the community has been great so far! I’ll definitely be checking out your blog as well (your pancakes have already got me drooling!)
Talk to you soon!
I love cardio bursts…anything to get your heart rate up is a ok in my book!
Happy Saturday!
I love this – I just posted a quick and effective way to add strength moves into a sprint work out this morning! But it’s much less organized than yours. Definitely printing this PDF to give it a try!
Have a great weekend girl!!!
In the workout, what is a Thruster? Can you describe what the exercise is, it’s not clear to me what it actually is.
Thanks!
Hi Meredith!
They’re actually a very simple move. Here is a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peLFTePbfDQ. The girl in it squats down to the level of a medicine ball, but you don’t have to use the ball if you don’t want to. You can hold either a barbell or dumbells in your hands.
