Fit Bit Friday 198: The Swim 2K Workout

Hey guys!

Phew. Another week behind us, another beautiful weekend ahead! Time is ticking down until my half iron-distance triathlon, Challenge Penticton (only 9 weeks away), as well as my first olympic distance one, the Vancouver Subaru Triathlon on July 5th. That’s only ONE week. Gaah!! I’m excited and nervous and anxious all at the same time, and for those of you wondering where my training recap is for this month, don’t you worry – it’s coming. I’ve decided to roll it into a race recap for the Vancouver Subaru Tri, so stay tuned for that in a couple of weeks.

Until then…. it’s time to chat about fitness – specifically, a swim workout.

Work It Out

Alright, I apologize for the lack of sexiness in today’s title – my creative brain was just not firing on all cylinders this week! Recently I’ve received a few requests for swim workouts, but I’ve also heard that many of you just don’t have the desire to push yourselves to swim for an extended period of time. I totally know the feeling – without a plan, a 15 minute swim can feel like you’ve been at it for an hour and boredom can set in fast. On the other hand, just like in any other type of workout, when you have a set out plan it’s a lot more likely that you’ll see it through to the end.

The Swim 2K Workout

Just as the title implies, you’ll have covered 2000 yards (or metres, or whatever your pool is measured in!) by the end of this swim. If you’re not quite there yet from a fitness perspective, just do the workout one time through and skip the second round. Next time you swim, add in a little bit more at a time until you’re able to swim the full 2KM.

Speaking from my own experience, your first swim may feel like a really tough slog if it’s not something you do regularly. But keep persevering because it won’t take long to develop a rhythm. Our muscles adapt fast, so don’t worry – it will start to feel easier the more you do it!

Turn It Up

I’ve been asked a few times about what I do to keep myself entertained on my long indoor trainer rides, and the answer is a lot of queued up Youtube videos. The night before, I find a whole bunch of them – everything from inspiring Ironman coverage and triathlon transition tips, to lifestyle entrepreneur interviews and Ted Talks.

Watching Ironman coverage always makes me excited and motivated to swim, bike and run harder, and this video of highlights from last year’s Kona Ironman world championships was no different. The song you’ll hear is Who’s Your Daddy by Benny Benassi (annoying to listen to on its own but good as a workout tune), and if you’re having trouble seeing the video from the race below, you’ll also find it here.

Have A Read

Now it’s over to you! Let’s hear…

  • Anyone racing this weekend? If so, I’m sending you all the speedy vibes and I hope you have a great time!
  • Do you incorporate swimming into your fitness routine? What are some of your favourite swim workouts?

  1. This is going to be my friday night and I can’t wait. 🙂

Christie’s sister, Sarah and I were talking about your crazy rides last night. You are so fierce!

  2. Thanks for the fantastic swim workout – I’m always at a loss what to do when I get to the pool, and it always turns into “I’m going to swim some laps!” and that’s it!

My race this weekend will be a suffer-fest thanks to this heat – but you’re going to destroy that tri next Sunday!
