It seems like no matter what diet book, celebrity nutritionist or wellness plan you look at, everyone’s got a go-to smoothie recipe that they swear by. If you’ve been hanging around here for any length of time, you’ll know I’m a big fan and when asked about my favourite, I’m not sure I could pick just one! But something that my favourites do have in common is that they’re heavy on the greens, lighter on the fruit, lower in sugar and rich in nutrients.
Many of the smoothies and juices we find on menus are often totally jacked up with sugar, and even though this is usually all naturally occurring sugar from fruit, it’s still sugar, and it still causes a spike in blood sugar levels. That means an energy high, then low, and when your body goes through that repeatedly, you begin to need more sugar to achieve the same high. (If you’re thinking “that sounds like what happens with alcohol tolerance”, you’d be correct.)
So what’s the fix? I like to keep sugar low and incorporate sources of protein and fat, which both contribute towards making us feel full and keeping blood sugar levels stable. This Low Sugar Key Lime Pie Green Smoothie is an example.
You’ll get protein from Vega Sport (or your favourite high-quality plant-based protein powder), as well as fibre and healthy fats from avocado, chia and hemp seeds. The coconut helps to create a creamy consistency, while that spinach packs a ton of B vitamins, vitamin K, antioxidants, iron, magnesium and folate. And the limes – they’re my favourite part! Combine their zingy tartness with everything else in this beauty and you’ve got something that tastes like a coconutty key lime pie – but for only 10g sugar and plenty of fibre to keep blood sugar and energy levels in check. Cheers to that!Print

- Prep Time: 5 mins
- Cook Time: 0 mins
- Total Time: 5 minutes
- Yield: 1 serving
- Category: drinks + smoothies
- Method: blender
- 1 big fistful fresh baby spinach
- 2 limes, flesh only (rind + peel completely sliced off), + 1 tsp lime zest
- 1 scoop vanilla Vega Sport Performance Protein
- 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut yogurt
- 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk
- 1 tsp organic matcha powder
- 1/4 avocado
- 2 tsp hemp seeds
- 1 tsp chia seeds
- 1 serving Navitas Organics Daily Superfood Wellness Boost (optional)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- toasted flaked coconut, for topping
- Toss all ingredients except for the flaked coconut into a high-speed blender and blend until completely smooth.
- Add ice to adjust consistency as needed, blending again until all chunks are gone.
- Pour into a glass and top with coconut, then serve.
I’ve used Vega Sport Performance Protein in this recipe, which contains stevia as a sweetener. If your protein powder doesn’t contain a natural sweetener, this smoothie will be more on the tart side. If you want a sweeter taste without adding much sugar, you could also add a few frozen strawberries.
