I’ve never been a huge TV watcher. In university, I would never go out to late night movies because it was almost guaranteed that I’d fall asleep in the first 30 minutes. While I’ve grown in many ways since then, my movie and TV-watching endurance has remained the same. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about a chick flick, a thriller, an Oscar-nominated film or a documentary on something I’m super interested in – putting me in front of a screen and asking her to sit still for an hour or more is one of the fastest ways to put me to sleep!
Thank goodness for podcasts. Free learning available any time, anywhere? Why not!? These have been among my top resources for continuing education in my 20s, and what’s awesome is that it doesn’t matter what you’re interested in – there’s probably at least a few hosts covering the topic.
Personally (and not surprisingly), I gravitate towards podcasts on nutrition and holistic wellness, fitness, self development, entrepreneurship and business. In fact, if a few more hours were magically made available in the day, you can bet I’d venture into starting my own too. (I’ve given it some serious thought, trust me!)
Way back in 2014 I shared some of my favourites at the time – The Rich Roll Podcast, The School of Greatness by Lewis Howes, Ben Greenfield, The Lively Show, Endurance Planet, Bulletproof Radio – many of these have grown to be some of the most popular, top-rated shows on iTunes. Four years later, I still love harnessing my inner nerd and hearing about the latest science in nutrition and sports performance. But with that said, some of the content resonating with me most right now is geared towards women, and produced by women.
Riding on the energy and empowerment vibes of International Women’s Day last week, I thought I’d share some of the podcasts that have become regular weekly listening for me. Whether you’re a female entrepreneur in the wellness space, or if these things are just personal interests of yours, I think the things these ladies are talking about will resonate with you, too.
The Almost 30 Podcast – Lindsey Simcik and Krista Williams
Being only 5 months shy of turning 30 myself, it’s no wonder listening to the Almost 30 Podcast has become a ritual. In fact, when I first subscribed, I spent close to an entire weekend binge listening to every episode ever released. It was like having 2 of my best girlfriends hanging out in my apartment, chatting for hours about all things wellness. I recently had a FaceTime chat with Lindsey where we discussed our love for Four Sigmatic’s mushroom elixirs, Saje, hiking, hot yoga, and my dream of visiting Erewhon in LA, which is where she and Krista are based. These girls are the best, they have amazing guests, and if that isn’t enough, they’re absolutely hilarious.
Well Now is a fairly new podcast produced by my favourite source for essential oils and diffuser blends, Saje! The company will always have a special place in my heart because they’re Vancouver-based, and the first to introduce me to the wide-ranging health benefits of aromatherapy. The conversations on the show include doctors, wellness practitioners and healers of all kinds. Topics covered to date include chronic fatigue, anxiety and inflammation.
Women, Work and Worth – Mavenly + Co.
It doesn’t matter if you’re an entrepreneur blazing your own path or working a more conventional 9-5 job – the ladies of Mavenly + Co have the podcast (and a whole bunch of other resources) to support you. The podcast is full of honest conversations about work and life on the go, and designing a life and career with purpose. Recent topics have included brand building, what’s keeping you from doing work you really want to be doing, productivity, and having tough conversations at work. It’s practical, super actionable advice I think all of us can benefit from.
Girlboss Radio – Sophia Amoruso
A great listen for all women, but especially entrepreneurial ones and those that work in a corporate setting (which is probably a lot of us!) Girlboss Radio is hosted by Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso. She and her guests share real, raw, vulnerable and often hilarious conversations about redefining what success looks like. Past episodes have featured model and skincare company founder Miranda Kerr, actress Sarah Jessica Parker, Gabby Bernstein, actress and goop founder Gwenyth Paltrow, celebrity hair colourist Tracy Cunningham, Drybar founder Alli Webb, and loads more.
That’s So Maven – Davida Kugelmass
If you recognize her name as the blogger behind The Healthy Maven, you’d be correct! Davida was a guest blogger here when I was in Hawaii last fall, and she’s also the host of the That’s So Maven podcast. As a fellow Canadian, she’s always been someone whose messages hit home with me.
What I really appreciate about Davida (aside from her honesty and willingness to be vulnerable and real) is how she approaches every conversation with an open mind. A lot of the top health podcasts on iTunes tend to feature the same authors and public figures, but Davida curates a diverse guest list (including plenty of what you might consider “less famous” guests) all of whom are incredibly knowledgeable in their areas of expertise. Topics include benefits of adaptogens, what’s up with crystals, the power of positive thinking, inclusivity in fitness, body image, nutrition, blogging, relationships and many more.
The Chasing Joy Podcast – Georgie Morley
Also another blogger-turned podcaster, Georgie is someone whose message always seems to come at the right time. She’s incredibly down to earth, relatable, and kind of reminds me of that best friend who just totally gets you. The Chasing Joy Podcast covers wellness topics including relationships, self confidence, and little ways to infuse more happiness into every day life. Her recent guests have shared knowledge on ayurveda, gut health, menstrual health, and blending functional nutrition with Western medicine.
That’s So Retrograde – Elizabeth Kott and Stephanie Simbari
I like to think of That’s So Retrograde as Sex and the City for wellness-savvy ladies who need a good laugh and some quality girl chat. New age-y, wellness and pop culture, all in one show with a killer lineup of guests. I can always count on hosts Elizabeth and Stephanie to keep me up to speed on the latest crazy LA wellness trends, and if you were to walk into my apartment on a Friday night, you’d most likely find me with a face mask on, laughing to their hilarious banter as I unwind from the work week.
