As of today there are only 10 sleeps until Christmas. For those celebrating, you may have already finished your Christmas shopping. However, I’m sure that some of you still have a few people on your list that need to be taken care of. If any of those folks happen to be of the runner type, then I think you’ll find this guide useful. And if YOU happen to be of the runner type and fancy treating yourself to a few goodies, then you’ll probably like it too! 😉
A GPS Watch
This has quickly become one of my absolute must-have training tools, far surpassing my iPod or any other running gadgets I’ve used in the past couple of years! GPS watches are awesome because they track all sorts of data while on the run, the most useful (in my opinion) being heart rate. While it may be a more spendy gift for your running fanatic friend, trust me, this one will get you in the
good great books!
As a very proud brand ambassador for Polar, I’d recommend the M400 because it’s got so many easy to use features. Not only can you track your runs outside (as you’d expect!), but also those on the treadmill, indoor or outdoor cycling, trail running, strength training, swimming, cross training, and so many more. It allows you to set up activity goals, configure custom training views that include the data you want to see (like distance, pace, heart rate zone etc) and the numbers on the watch are really big and easily visible while moving. There’s also a phone and desktop app that can be used to get a better picture of overall training.
Their favourite running shoes
I know I’m not just speaking for myself by saying that shoes are to runners like candy is to children. You can’t have too much and there’s always room for a new pair. The big brands are coming out with some pretty sweet looking models for 2015 and even some of the late-2014 styles look awesome. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t been eyeing up a few pairs!
Aside from Asics (which I highly recommend!), I also recently had the chance to test out the New Balance Fresh Foam Zante shoes, which are the latest addition to the Fresh Foam family for 2015. They’re light (perfect for carrying along in a suitcase if your runner friend is going to a race away from home!) but very supportive. I’m able to do hour-long runs in them without any issues, whereas that just doesn’t happen for me in minimalist shoes that weigh about the same (7.5oz). These aren’t minimalist by any means, but if you were to hold them in your hands with your eyes closed, they’re certainly light enough to be!
I’m pretty sure these were in my gift guide last year, but they get another mention because they continue to be my favourites. These headphones don’t fall out – period. They come with 2 pairs of plastic coverings (one small, one large) that go over the earbuds, making them fit nice and securely in your ears.
This one’s not just for runners – I’m sure anyone would enjoy a great blender! Mine gets daily use whether it’s for smoothies, soups, dressings or dips, and I’m pretty sure I’ve got the cost per use down to fractions of a penny. It’s over 2 years old and still works just as well as the day I made my first smoothie in it.
Warm Post-Run Apparel
If I didn’t have to wear “real” cloths to work, I’d go straight from my workouts to the shower to cozy post-sweat session gear every single day. I’ve been a huge fan of the Lululemon Scuba Hoodie II ever since they started making it longer, and the Run Swiftly 1/2 Zip is great for keeping warm if you’ve still got some stretching or strength training to do after a run.
In addition to my much-loved Lulu, I’ve also recently become totally impressed by Fabletics. They’ve got heaps of awesome, very high quality workout wear and the prices are totally not going to break your budget. I discovered them one day on Facebook, and have bought 2 outfits since! The way it works is that you sign up as a VIP and take a survey to tell them about how you like to sweat. Each month on the 1st, you receive an email telling you your outfits are ready, and you’ve got 5 days to either purchase one (or many!) or decline. Of course, you can buy from the entire store at any time, but for the couple of months that I’ve been a member, they’ve had some great new designs come out at the beginning of the month. You can then accumulate credits that go towards free gear, and who wouldn’t love that?!
Based on what I’ve ordered so far, the quality has been amazing and the tights in particular are fabulous! My current faves are these mesh ones (called the Gaviota legging) which are currently sold out but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they come back in more colours:
If you’d like to get in on the action (for yourself or someone else!) and receive really cute workout outfits, feel free to use the link http://www.fabletics.ca/invite/eatspinrunrpt to sign up as a VIP. It allows me to get a small reward for referring you, and you get access to a bunch of super stylish, very reasonably priced workout gear!
I recently received one of these to try and love it! Hydration is hugely important for runners, and SodaStreams make it a bit more tasty and interesting to drink. The company makes flavours that can be purchased separately from the SodaStream machine itself, but I’ve been making my own with fresh and frozen fruit. A few frozen peach slices and fresh ginger root have been my favourite ingredient combinations so far.
A race entry
Once you’ve caught the race bug, you’ll quickly learn that the cost of competing can add up fast. If you know that your favourite runner has their eye on a particular race, why not cover their entry fee for them? Better yet, enter for yourself as well so the two of you can be training buddies!
A travel mug
Smoothies are one of my go-to post-workout breakfasts, but let’s be real here: it’s COLD outside! I’m the type that sips tea all the time, whether at work, at home, or somewhere between the two, so having a good travel mug is one of my necessities. I’ve got the Camelbak Forge which absolutely does not spill and it’s easy to clean. If you’ve ever had a travel mug with a hard-to-clean lid or cup that’s too narrow to fit your hand into, you’ll know that these are both crucial features!
A pedicure or massage
Trust me, unless your favourite runner is the type that doesn’t like people touching their feet, you can’t go wrong with this one.
Sports nutrition products
If you know what they like to use for their pre-, during-, and post-race nutrition, topping up their stash is never a bad idea. When I go to races, travel packets of my Vega Sugar-Free Pre-Workout Energizer, Electrolyte Hydrator, and Recovery Accelerator are always some of the first items in my bag. They also happen to make great stocking stuffers!
Speaking of sports nutrition, how about a little giveaway? I use Vega’s complete Vega Sport system for my training, and definitely can’t narrow it down to a single favourite product. The sugar-free pre-workout energizer is like rocket fuel and the electrolyte hydrator is perfect for keeping me going during hot sessions. (I drank plenty of it while running in Bahrain last week!) These days my post-workout smoothies contain either Performance Protein or the new Vega One, and I start to get very anxious when the bottom of the tub begins to show! Best of all, there’s no crappy ingredients in any of the products and they’re all gluten-free, vegan-friendly, and taste really good.
Regardless of whether you need a little Vega Sport for yourself or want to share it with your favourite runner this Christmas, I’d love to ship some your way! My very generous friends at Vega are allowing me to give away the following prize pack:
- 1 tub of the NEW Vega One in the flavour of your choice
- A sampler bundle of Vega Sport products
Here’s what you need to do to enter:
