Fit Bit Friday 205: The Lungbuster Swim Workout

Fit Bit Friday - Eat-Spin-Run-Repeat.com

Hey friends!

As you read this I am most likely waiting in line outside the Vancouver Convention Centre for the Lululemon Seawheeze Showcase Store to open. The race is tomorrow, and Danielle and Christina arrived yesterday. We’ve already been to eat at Heirloom once, and I’m thinking we just might set a new record for the number of visits in 3 days. If you are Seawheezing this weekend too, we might see you there (or at some of the great Vancouver spots I listed in The Seawheezer’s Guide to Vancouver.)

I’ll have plenty of run chat to share on Monday in my race recap, but for now, let’s talk about something entirely different – swimming!

Work It Out

At this point in my triathlon training, I’m typically swimming between 6-7km per week. I’ve said it before, but one of the beauties of swim sessions is that you can pretty much give them your everything, emptying the tank completely, and still recover fast due to the low impact.  This week’s workout is one my coach gave me on Wednesday, and one I hadn’t done in a while. I won’t lie – it was a killer! And that’s why it’s getting the name…..

The Lungbuster Swim Workout

When I used to swim competitively as a kid, a lung buster referred to swimming as far as you can in the pool without taking a breath. I sucked at it, and I hated doing it, so don’t you worry – you don’t have to! This set consists of 10 hard 100m efforts, but a good amount of active rest too. If you’re up for a challenge, this is definitely one to try!

A note on the 20, 15 and 10s rest intervals between 100s: If you need to extend these based on your fitness level, please do so! It’s meant to be challenging, but remember to be safe first. 🙂

Turn It Up

It’s hard to believe (especially based on this video) that Demi Lovato used to be an innocent little Disney Channel star, and that she got her start on Barney. I’m usually so-so when it comes to grown-up Demi’s music, but Cool for the Summer is one I’m secretly (or not so secretly) loving. It starts off a little slow, but has a lot of energy once it gets going. Enjoy!
